'Ik sta hier. Ik verdwijn. Mijn vacuüm blijft achter.' 'I stand here. I disappear. My vacuum remains.' « Je suis là. Je disparais. Mon vide demeure. » — Bert De Leeuw
Bert De Leeuw (Antwerp, 8 June 1926 – 25 November 2007) grew up in the Zuid district of Antwerp, in a family of dock workers. Drawing was a constant from childhood. At fifteen he attended evening classes at the Volkshogeschool Emile Vandervelde in Antwerp — first art history, then decorative arts. During the day he worked as an apprentice at a firm producing cinema advertising.
Before long he started his own business, revolutionising the trade with painted panels whose extraordinary interplay of light caught the eye. By mixing glass beads into the paint, colour and sheen appeared to shift with the viewing angle. This fascination with matter and surface never left his work.
His talent did not go unnoticed. Film director Roland Verhavert brought him into contact with the BRT (the forerunner of today's VRT), where he worked as a set designer. At the same time, in his attic room, he was quietly building an artistic practice of his own. In 1959 he was laureate at the first Paris Biennale — a turning point that led him to commit fully to his art.
In his matter paintings, De Leeuw gradually replaced the sand and coal ash in his paint with bitumen mixed with pigment — a material that had to be heated with a blowtorch to be worked. His studio sometimes resembled the forge of the Roman god Vulcan. From bitumen he moved to sculpture: bas-reliefs and freestanding works in plaster, wax and bronze.

For him these works were not abstract. "Abstraction does not exist. Just look at Piet Mondriaan," he said. The controlled incisions in the paint refer to the human condition — marked by the scratches on the soul. His fascination with matter and surface, with the tension between the visible and the intangible, ran as a constant thread through his entire oeuvre.

By fusing geometric and organic forms, De Leeuw forged a visual language entirely his own. Ideas rarely stayed in a single form: each design could branch into painting, sculpture, maquette or scenography. In 1976 he created the scenography for Béla Bartók's opera Bluebeard's Castle at the Royal Flemish Opera in Antwerp — an impressive sculptural staging that illustrates his boundless versatility.
In the early 1970s, as computers made their first appearance, his fascination with numbers took hold. He spoke of "the sacred sequence 8/16/24/48/96" — beginning with the living 8 and ending with the dead 96. "Numbers communicate with each other," he said, "just like people."
In 1970 he completed 1/24×23×22…×1: 24 conically shaped bronze elements, each with four distinct sides. Endlessly combinable, never definitive. The title is not an abstraction but a formula: the number of possible arrangements of 24 elements. The set — with 96 distinct faces in total — offers a near-infinite number of compositional possibilities. Yet each element is also a carrier of human emotion: the three stacked elements in the KMSKA garden form a triptych of friendship — Jan Gloudemans, René Gysen and the artist himself, united for eternity.
"The major problem is avoiding the literary, creating forms without having to explain them."
In the 1990s De Leeuw worked on Similaun 3000: a group of 24 cylindrical elements inspired by the discovery of Ötzi, the ice mummy from around 3300 BC. The sculptures evoke both archaeology and future thinking — human remains from a distant past alongside the modern fantasy of being cryogenically frozen and revived in the year 3000. The ivory-coloured patina recalls the colour of bone; the cylindrical forms suggest sarcophagi.
